From the Eastern Catholic Churches Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) is the largest.
The UGCC is a Church of the Byzantine rite which is in full ecclesial communion with the Pope of Rome and acknowledges his spiritual and jurisdictional authority.
All names of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church:
- Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Byzantine rite;
- Uniate Church;
- Ukrainian Catholic Church;
- Greek Catholic Church;
- Kyiv's Catholic Church.
The name "Greek Catholic Church" was introduced in 1774 to distinguish this Church from the Armenian Catholic and Roman Catholic Churches by the Empress Maria-Teresa.
In official documents of church was used term "Ecclesia Ruthena unita". The name "Ukrainian Catholic Church" in 1960 started to be used in official documents to refer underground church in Soviet Ukraine and catholics ukrainians in the diaspora. The name "Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Byzantine rite" was used in the statistical annual of Papa "Annuario Pontificio". At the UGCC Bishops Synod in September 1999 to emphasize the identity of this Church was proposed name "Kyiv's Catholic Church".
